Job description

The forefront of technology is continuous moving and predicting progression is a key capability for Saab. We are looking for two students to contribute the knowledge base by analyzing the effects on the hydrodynamics characteristics and it’s influences on the performance of a highspeed vehicle traveling close to the water surfaceYour roleBackgroundDefense industry is constantly striving to be on the forefront of development. As competition is ever-increasing, it is quite literally vital to survival to be ahead in times of conflict. Being able to make accurate predictions of future technology development is challenging, to say the least. Currently we see large investments worldwide in autonomous functions in military aviation and robotics. Operating these different platforms in different locations and varying environmental conditions is part of this. Being able to predict the behavior of our platforms during the design phase is therefore important.Description of the master thesisThe main objective of these works is to analyses the influences on the hydrodynamic performance when traveling close to the free water surface. Here several parts are of interest:The propulsion system, which is affected by cavitationThe forces on the body, influencing the stability / navigation performanceThe effects from waves, risk for penetrating the surface. All these will contribute to design process as well as limiting the operational window both in present and future underwater systems at Saab.Depending on student(s) and the adviser’s special area of interest one of these subjects are to be chosen. The proposed thesis is divided into the following tasks:Design a CFD model in ANSYS CFX for free surface flowInclude an existing vehicle (torpedo) in the modelGeometricalMeshingPhysical setup (Free water surface distance/Speed/Angle of attack/…)Execution (on HPC cluster)Analysis of CFD resultsAlternative 1 Cavitation investigation / 2 phase CFD analysisAlternative 2/3 Define input to 6 DOF simulation / Perform basic stability testsYour profileThe suggested work is suitable for one or two students with an interest in hydrodynamics and advanced numerical analysis. You are at the end of your education in engineering physics, applied mathematics or any other related field and about to start your Master Thesis work for 30 HP. Knowledge in CFD and Matlab or similar programming language is considered an advantage. This position requires that you pass a security vetting based on the current regulations around/of security protection. For positions requiring security clearance additional obligations on citizenship may apply. What you will be a part ofBehind our innovations stand the people who make them possible.
