We are looking for a suitable candidate to work alongside our team of medical and clinical oncologists.The post holder will join our team of medical and clinical oncologists providing Oncology services from an West Kent base. We have a well-established oncology research department, providing the opportunity for the post holder to run and develop clinical trials.Main duties of the jobLocum Consultant in Medical Oncology, to provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility. This will include any patients referred to you and cared for by you personally or by members of your team and, in addition, any patients of consultant colleagues when you are covering on-call or for annual leave.To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust’s patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust’s strategic direction.About usMaidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust was formed in April 2000. It consists of two District General Hospitals based at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells providing services to approximately 450,000 people living in Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, East Sussex and the surrounding areas.Its major hospitals are The Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury near Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone Hospital. The Kent Oncology Centre in West Kent is based at Maidstone Hospital. The Trust manages the Oncology centre based at Maidstone and Canterbury. These services form an integral part of Kent’s Cancer Services.The Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 460,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population.The Trust’s Chair is Ms Annette Doherty, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Medical Director is Dr Sara Mumford. Clinical services are organised into nine clinical directorates. The Clinical Director’s of the Kent Oncology Centre is Dr Kannon Nathan & Dr Timothy Sevitt. Job responsibilitiesDuties of this post will be to support the consultant service across a range of tumour types:Attending Consultant led out-patient clinics (both in the Centre and Peripheral Clinics), and undertaking related admin and chemotherapy prescribing.Supervision of SHOs and ward patients.Review of patients attending for chemotherapy and radiotherapy if required by nursing or radiography staff.Teaching of SHOs and medical students.Involvement in clinical governance and audit activities.Person Specification
Education
Essential

• Full GMC Registration.
• Entry on the Specialist Register as a clinical oncologist or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the advisory appointments committee.

Desirable

• Higher Qualification in Medicine or Surgery.
• Research degree (MD/PhD).
• Clinical Experience in relevant tumour sites.

Experience
Essential

• Clinical Training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in specialty.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Desirable

• Experience in Clinical Audit and Research.
• Experience in medical education.

Skills
Essential

• Enthusiasm for developing tumour site specialisation and Cancer Services in Kent.
• Ability to organise and manage.

Desirable

• An interest and a capacity to teach and learn from members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Research degree (MD/PhD).
• Staff management: delegating, appraisal of performance, dealing with poor performance, coaching and motivating.
