What you’ll doThe Systems Engineer will work within a small team within the Technology Delivery group who are responsible for all engineering aspects from initial concept to introduction of service of Aviation and Maritime Safety communication systems.The postholder will focus on the evolution of Viasat’s SwiftBroadband Safety infrastructure, based on a detailed understanding of the new and emerging communications and surveillance requirements for Air Traffic Management and also develop their knowledge and expertise in design and engineering of Maritime Safety systems.The role requires close working with industry partners; aircraft manufacturers (i.e. Airbus and Boeing), avionics suppliers, and air traffic communication service providers that operate ground connectivity for ATC centres, airline operational services and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), maritime safety agencies, and terminal manufacturers. Additionally, the aviation and maritime regulators who set the communication and surveillance requirements. The candidate will become a technical subject matter expert in the System Definition and must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and adjacent disciplines.Viasat, Inc. seeks an experienced systems engineer for this role within the Engineering Office Systems group, in close cooperation with the Systems Architecture group, the Product group, the Aviation and Maritime Business Units and Operations. The day-to-day
- Becoming SME / design authority for Viasat aero and maritime safety engineering and systems standardisation, over time being responsible for maintaining Viasat’s System Definition Manual (SDM) for safety service systems.
- Working closely with spacecraft systems and ground systems architects develop system design requirements for next generation safety services, working with manufacturers to enhance terminal interoperability as the network of Viasat satellite constellations evolves
- Produce system concepts, candidate architectures and conduct trade-off studies.
- Definition of technical solutions, costs and benefits for internal business cases
- Create detailed requirements and design specifications/supplier Statements of Work for use in competitive procurements for evolution of Viasat’s infrastructure.
- Manage suppliers for implementation, verification, and change management of the safety infrastructure.
- Define/refine the operational model in planning for service introduction readiness, initial operations (e.g. customer Beta testing), and in-life service management metrics (KPIs) needed to demonstrate compliance with internal and external performance standards.
- Manage the Commercial Service Introduction (CSI) of new safety products and services
- Form strong technical relationships with peers at satcom avionic manufacturers, airframers, ESA, and Viasat service providers.
- Occasional international travel will be required
What you’ll need
- Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Computer or Communications science or equivalent and 5+ years of professional relevant experience
- Previous experience in either aviation or maritime safety terminal development based on Viasat’s BGAN service or the delivery of SwiftBroadband Safety or Fleet Safety service
- Technically fluent in telecommunications technologies, an understanding of IP-based mobile networking technologies and ideally satellite or mobile communications systems
- Strong analytical and system troubleshooting capability
- Strong inter-personal skills including the ability to establish and maintain relationships and trust
- Ability to work in a complex, international matrix organization alongside 3rd-parties
- Positive and energetic attitude.

What will help you on the job
- Knowledge of networking technologies and protocols
- Working in a ISO27000 framework or equivalent
- Knowledge of IT security practices including IPSec and PKI
- Good knowledge of software development and engineering techniques
- Experience in the identification and capture of IT functional and non-functional requirements for large, complex projects
- Data mining and analytics techniques
- Knowledge of Viasat and other satellite communications systems.
- Knowledge of aeronautical Air Traffic Service standards and processes; ICAO, ARINC, RTCA, RTCM, Eurocae, Certification, and existing Air Traffic DataLink and Maritime Safety Service standards as defined by IMO.
