The Department of Economics and Social Sciences, Institute of Social Ecology is currently seeking a
Postdoctoral Research Associate
(Reference code 262)
Extent of employment: 40 hours per week
Duration of employment: as of now, limited to a period of 6 years
Workplace: 1070 Vienna, Schottenfeldgasse 29
Allocation in compliance with the Col ective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1 lit. b
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least: € 4.752,30
(payable 14 times per year)
The Institute of Social Ecology (SEC) is a team-oriented research environment that encompasses
natural and social sciences as well as humanities in the field of inter- and transdisciplinary
sustainability research. The position is associated with the professorship of Social Ecology (Univ. Prof.
Dr. Melanie Pichler) and is expected to conduct individual and collaborative social science research
on social-ecological transformations that is connected to quantitative and qualitative research
approaches at SEC. Specifical y, the person is expected to conduct a post doc project in the field of
social ecology, ecological economics or similar (e.g. provisioning systems, feminist/institutional
economics, social-ecological practices, environmental labour studies, degrowth) and develop an
interdisciplinary research profile in this field.
Responsibilities

  • Participate in and apply for third party funding
  • Publish in scientific journals and present research at national and international conferences
  • Teach individual and collaborative courses in BA, MA and/or PhD programs
  • Participate in and organize third mission activities
  • Participate in self-governance and institutional development at the institute, department

and university level
Required skil s and qualifications

  • Doctorate degree / PhD in interdisciplinary sustainability research (e.g. socio-ecological

economics, natural resource management, political ecology) or social sciences (e.g. political
science, political economy, sociology, social anthropology)

  • Language skills: English, German
  • Experience in and proven ability to conduct qualitative social research in the field of social

ecology, socio-ecological economics or adjacent research fields

  • Experience in interdisciplinary sustainability research (e.g. integration of qualitative and

quantitative data, integration of knowledge from natural and social sciences)

  • Collaborative and communicative skills for working in an interdisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to publish in international journals
  • Teaching experience and didactic skills

Desirable skil s and qualifications

  • Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding
  • Skills for and experience in third mission (e.g. non-scientific writing, engagement in civil

society initiatives)
