UNIVERSITETET I OSLO SENTRALADMINISTRASJON

Job description

About the positionPosition as Researcher available at the NJORD Centre, Department of Physics, University of Oslo. The position is for a period of 2 years.
Starting date no later than 01.09.2025.Job descriptionWe are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled experimental scientist to join our team at the Njord Centre, University of Oslo
( ) for a 2-years Researcher position in the REACT project funded by the Research Council of Norway (FRIPRO Young Research Talent Grant).REACT investigates in-situ mineral growth within nano- and microscale volumes and aims to understand the causes and consequences of destructive and cohesive growth of minerals under spatial confinement. Our goal is to understand and control the cohesive and damaging growth of minerals in pores, which has consequences for many natural and anthropogenic environments such us built cultural heritage and modern infrastructure, geological CO2 storage sites and subsurface reservoirs, and mineral-based materials such as Portland cement. The experimental approach of the REACT project relies mainly on the surface forces apparatus (SFA). SFA is one of the few techniques, which can provide measurements of nano- to microscale, distance-resolved surface forces in a confined geometry. We will use these measurements to find links between surface forces acting during cohesive and damaging growth of minerals in pores in-situ.Your tasks as a Researcher, preferably with a background in experimental surface science, will mainly include performing, analyzing, and interpreting surface forces apparatus experiments and complimentary atomic force microscopy experiments on reactive mineral surfaces, such as calcite, gypsum, calcium silicate hydrates, and magnesium oxide. You will also take part in designing the experimental
setups and fabricating the appropriate surfaces for the experiments using various thin film deposition techniques in a close collaboration with other team members. The Researcher position is based at the interdisciplinary Njord Centre, where physicists and geoscientists interact on a daily basis. There will be also a possibility to apply for a short stay (maximum 3 months) hosted by the project’s
collaborators at the University of Oxford, Department of Chemistry.QualificationsThe Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. Required qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in natural sciences (physics, chemistry, geosciences, material science, surface science or related fields) with a strong emphasis on experimental background. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment.
  • Good knowledge of data analysis using Matlab, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Good experience in inorganic material characterization with standard techniques such as SEM-EDX, XRD, Raman, FTIR.
  • The candidate is expected to publish papers in leading, international journals, and must therefore be able to document previous publications in top-level journals.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

Desired qualifications * Strong experimental experience in surface science of minerals or inorganic materials, passion for experimental work, and patience for challenging experiments. Candidates experienced in force measurements using surface force apparatus technique or atomic force microscopy, and in inorganic material synthesis and characterization will be given a priority.Personal skills

  • You have good communication skills, enjoy solving research questions as a part of a team but you are also willing to take initiative
  • You are enthusiastic and curious
  • You enjoy working with challenging experiments and have good perseverance
