Job title:
A Four-Year PhD Studentship in Dental Radiology – Full-Time
Company
Dublin Dental University Hospital
Job description
Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH)A Four-Year PhD Studentship in Dental RadiologyRadiology research in Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH), Trinity College Dublin has focused on Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) dose optimisation and related aspects facilitated through collaborations in UK and Europe. We wish to continue to expand in this technology driven field by establishing interdisciplinary collaborations. In DDUH, radiology research is led by Dr Margarete McGuigan, who has a fully funded four-year PhD studentship available to commence in March 2025, whole-time contract.Project Aim:My group has published on dose optimisation strategies and the link between objective and subjective image quality (IQ). Conventional dental radiography includes relatively low-dose imaging modalities, contributing only a small percentage to the annual population dose from medical exposures. However, CBCT imaging exhibits a wide variation of dose levels, with the potential to contribute more significantly to this annual population dose, particularly if not optimised. Despite the development of guidelines and dose optimisation protocols in CBCT imaging, there are still considerable challenges remaining. The rapidly expanding range of CBCT systems and particularly more affordable hybrids models (combined 2D & 3D imaging units), exhibit huge ranges in dose levels, with data on image quality and effective dose range available in only a few of the currently available devices. Optimisation of these diverse units may be best approached by the development of a 3D printed test object to facilitate optimisation with a potential of commercial utility. Overall, the aim of this PhD project is to investigate and advance dose optimisation in dental CBCT, bringing your background qualification/skills either in physics (+/- medical), radiography, biomedical engineering or related scientific discipline to drive this forward. The successful applicants for the post must have:Hold at least a 2.1 honours degree or higher undergraduate degree in physics (+/- medical), radiography, biomedical engineering or a similar degree.Display a high level of competence in the English language in one of the examination systems recognised by Trinity College Dublin.Closing Date for applications is November 15th 2024 at 17.00. No late applications will be accepted.Shortlisting will take place and interviews will be scheduled shortly after. The successful candidate is expected to commence the PhD studentship on 3rd of March 2025.Interested candidates should include a CV and Cover Letter detailing their career aspiration drivers for attaining such a scholarship. The Studentship will provide an annual tax-free student stipend of €25,000 for four years as well as university Ph.D. fees (EU-rate only).Interested candidates should upload a cover letter with a copy of their Curriculum Vitae to Hirehive. For any informal enquiries please contact Dr Margarete McGuigan at .
