The VesselREV Ocean is unlike any other ship. It is a state-of-the-art research and expedition vessel equipped with some of the most sophisticated facilities onboard for carrying out cutting edge ocean science as well as offering charter opportunities designed to integrate exploration, adventure, and science. REV Oceanwill operate as a research vessel for 2/3 of the year and be available for charters for 1/3 of the year. Position OverviewREV Ocean is seeking an experienced and visionary Captain to lead this one-of-a-kind vessel. This role offers a rare opportunity to helm one of the world’s most advanced research ships, navigating critical marine ecosystems and contributing to a mission of global significance: protecting and improving the health of our ocean.The ideal candidate will possess exceptional maritime expertise and leadership skills, balancing the operational needs of a world-class research vessel while delivering seamless, high-end charter experiences. Key Responsibilities: Vessel Command
- Overall authority for the health and safety of all personnel onboard, the safety of the vessel and the environment.
- Responsible for ensuring the vessel complies with all flag state, classification society and local rules and regulations which affect the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
Safety & Compliance
- Oversee the maintenance and readiness of safety equipment.
- Conduct regular audits and safety inspections.
- Total commitment to working safely and fully complying with the company Safety Management System.
Leadership & Management
- Lead by example and foster a positive and professional environment through effective supervision, mentorship, and support.
- Promote seamless communication across departments.
- Collaborate with and coordinate scientific, technical, and hospitality teams.
- Responsible for the overall management, planning, organisation and control of all vessel activities.
- Coordinate daily vessel activities, including expeditions and logistics.
- Oversee the vessel’s critical systems, working closely with the Chief Engineer for maintenance and repairs.
- Overall budget responsibility for the vessel.
Qualifications & Experience: Licenses & Certifications
- Valid CoC (STCW II/2, Master Mariner above 3000GT).
- Valid medical fitness certification for seafarers.
- Non-EEA citizens will need to complete an approved Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS) course to serve on a NIS vessel.
- Relevant operational certificates and courses.
Experience
- At least 5 years in a senior officer role aboard research vessels, expedition ships, boutique cruise vessels, advanced offshore client vessels or large yachts. The ideal candidate should have experience across several of the mentioned ship types.
- Proven ability to manage complex operations in remote and challenging marine environments.
- Demonstrated success in leading diverse teams and ensuring safety and compliance.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Organizational and problem-solving abilities, particularly under pressure.
- Capacity to collaborate with all departments, including science, technical, and hospitality crew.
- A genuine passion for ocean conservation and scientific research, with a commitment to sustainability.
- Must excel in guest relations, being able to adapt to changing needs, and ensure luxury charters exceed expectations.
