Main purpose of job:The British Embassy Copenhagen is recruiting a hard-working, dynamic and policy-minded Climate and Energy Officer. Your role will be to lead on the British Embassy’s Climate and Energy work, promoting links between the UK and Denmark. You will drive implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Energy between the UK and Denmark. You will also coordinate cross-Embassy activity on Climate and Energy, working with other government departments represented in Copenhagen. You will maintain positive relationships across relevant Ministries and share regular reporting on the climate and energy situation in Denmark.What will you be expected to achieve?

  • To drive implementation and cross-Embassy coordination of our climate strategy for Denmark, including the implementation of the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the energy transition.
  • Working with trade, science and innovation, economic, political, programme and communications colleagues on policy and project delivery aligned with Embassy climate objectives, such as on growth, energy security, wind energy, Power-to-X, energy interconnectors and islands, CCUS, decarbonisation, and climate finance.
  • To deliver on cross-Embassy climate priorities and support the UK government and British Embassy’s climate-related activity.
  • To support Whitehall colleagues on energy and climate engagement with Denmark, through reporting on developments in Denmark and on Embassy climate activities.
  • To maintain stakeholder relations with officials in the Danish Department of Climate, Energy and Utilities, the Danish Energy Agency and other relevant ministries, to better understand and influence Danish policy on climate and energy, including their position within the EU.
  • To manage strategic engagement with non-Government actors, managing cooperation with our network of working level contacts in sub-national authorities, representatives of businesses, and civil society.
  • To support Ministerial and official visits from the UK and climate events in Denmark.
  • To work with our Public Diplomacy and Communications Team to design and deliver events, activities and communications products in support of the Embassy’s climate and energy objectives.
  • To work with others in the political team, where their work overlaps with climate and energy, such as on the Arctic, and science and innovation. To feed in relevant cross-cutting work to the communications and digital lead for our external platforms, in-line with the embassy’s communications strategy.

Essential qualifications, skills and experienceEssential on arrival:

  • Over 3 years’ experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or state government, international organisations or agencies, preferably in energy and climate change.
  • Experience of working across a team to coordinate activity.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An ability to develop networks of relevant stakeholders in person and remotely (e.g. in the UK).
  • Fluent written and spoken English language skills.
  • Danish language skills (minimum B2)
  • Strong writing skills.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experienceDesirable:

  • Strong understanding of international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience.
  • Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
  • Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills.
