  • Provide leadership and vision for the development and advancement of the nursing service and to contribute fully to the corporate management of the organisation
  • Deputise for the Person in Charge when required.
  • Assist and act as a catalyst in determining service needs and plans in conjunction with the Person in Charge and Management.
  • Participate in meetings with management as required.
  • Participate in meetings and report back on issues of concern raised at such meetings
  • Participate in meetings in Industrial Disputes as per Grievance Procedure and report back
  • In the absence of the Director of Nursing, manage the relationships with external agencies about the patient’s needs and ensure follow up with the allied services in the community.
  • Ensure that resources are used effectively and appropriately.
  • Undertake other relevant duties as may be determined from time to time by the Director of Nursing
  • Provide guidance to nursing and other staff in the implementation of nursing and Nursing home policies.
  • Maintain good employee relations and promote good communication with all relevant ward staff and departments.
  • In conjunction with Director of nursing, Plan and guide activities to provide optimum patient care in accordance with our nursing home policies and procedures.
  • Encourage recognition of the residents/patients as an individual and ensure that their needs and comforts are given priority.
  • To take personal responsibility for ensuring that patients have:
  • An individual assessment based on their specific needs
  • A plan of care tailored based on their specific needs
  • Plan of care implemented, evaluated and that modifications are made as their care needs change
  • Involvement of other practitioners of the multidisciplinary team as the context of care to the patient and carer needs demand

  • To actively promote and implement the concept of individualised patient care within the clinic
  • To liaise and report on a regular basis to the Person in Chargeon all aspects of patient care.
  • To develop and promote good relationships with patients, families, and carers, and make the unit environmentally welcoming and homely.
  • To ensure that the Nursing Documentation relating to patient care is in accordance with legislation and best practice.
  • To ensure strict confidentiality of information regarding patients/residents is adhered to.
  • Organise patient/resident care off-site when required, e.g. hospital appointments, appropriate transport, etc. Responsible for ordering medications monthly, receiving and recording them.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in ensuring that all the services within the nursing home are contributing optimally
  • Assist the Person in Charge to manage the bed allocation to ensure the optimal and appropriate use of each available bed
  • Ensure there is effective application of policies and procedures
  • Ensure Care Plans are accurate and up to date
  • Ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 and that staff are aware of and follow the standard procedures.
  • Check drug books and records and examine drug presses in each unit to maintain reasonable stock control and report any unacceptable incidents.
  • Maintain records of incidents, e.g. accidents, and forward appropriate incident records to the Safety Officer. Ensure notifiable injuries are reported to her immediately.
  • Ensure safe storage of clinical information
  • Ensure Notifications to HIQA are completed on time as required.
  • Ensure that audits are completed on time contain correct information for returns to HIQA.

Staff Management Responsibilities

  • Participate in the identification, development and delivery of induction, education, training, and development programmes for nursing and non-nursing staff
  • Manage own case load in accordance with the needs of the post.
  • Be responsible for the allocation, deployment, and rostering of assigned staff as necessary
  • Provide innovative and effective leadership, support, and advice to nursing and allied staff at all levels
  • Provide guidance to Senior staff nurses, nurses and allied staff in the implementation of nursing policies
  • Take part in the recruitment and selection of nursing and healthcare assistant staff, and any other staff when required
  • Introduce new members of nursing and allied staff to their colleagues and discuss their job profile with them
  • Participate in arranging appropriate orientation, fire and emergency procedures, manual handling and first aid procedures for all new staff
  • Adopt an approach of impartiality to all grades of staff
  • Improve and maintain a high morale among staff
  • Assist in the development of the management skills of immediate subordinates and give appropriate autonomy to persons who show leadership skills
  • Promote changes, which are research based, within the facility and motivate staff to be open to change and encourage dialogue between nursing professionals, healthcare assistants and others
  • Maintain a visible and approachable profile, be visible to patients, staff and relatives and be available to deal promptly and appropriately with complaints and problems when they arise
  • Deal with staff grievances including disciplinary matters promptly and appropriately
  • Ensure staff are adhering to good personal hygiene standards, are appropriately attired, including footwear, and wearing identification always.
  • Coordinate and carry out continuous staff appraisal and provide corrective measures as required through educational recommendations and mentorship programme.

Research, Development, Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Ensure that thoroughly researched documentation on policy and procedures is available, understood and adhered to
  • Monitor patient care and ensure that the agreed procedures are adhered to
  • Participate in setting standards which are realistic, and quality based
  • Ensure that professional standards are adhered to and that nurse’s practice within their legal limits as laid down by An Bord Altranais
  • Monitor work assignment and evaluate quality of work performed
  • Ensure that patients are cared for in the appropriate environment, which is safe and stress free, this will include monitoring of noise levels etc.
  • Ensure that equipment and human resources are effectively utilised
  • Develop quality initiatives including clinical audit, standard setting, investigation of complaints and untoward incidents
  • Encourage and advise on any nursing and associated research project and participate as required
  • Ensure that service users and others are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Adhere and contribute to the development and maintenance of nursing standards, protocols, and guidelines consistent with the highest standards of patient care.
  • Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation.

Education Responsibility

  • Assess the training needs of all staff under your supervision, assist in the development of in-service training and on-going education for all nursing and allied staff and organise appropriate in service and external training
  • Assist in the development of the managerial role of Senior Staff Nurses.
  • Initiate, foster and fully participate in various health promotion activities throughout the nursing home.
  • Identify and encourage the potential of all staff
  • Organise and develop a programme of induction and orientation of all new staff

Health & Safety/ Risk Management

  • Ensure that effective safety procedures are developed and managed to comply with statutory obligations.
  • Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.
  • Comply with the policies, procedures, and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and review of Health and Safety statements, as appropriate.
  • Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of the relevant person(s).
  • Maintain a feedback mechanism and report to senior management where appropriate.
  • Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.
  • Ensure adherence to policies in relation to the care and safety of any equipment supplied for the fulfillment of duty. Ensure advice of relevant stakeholders is sought prior to procurement.
  • Have a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role for example, Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc and comply with associated HSE protocols for implementing and maintaining these standards.
  • Support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable efficient health service.

Self-Development ResponsibilitiesBe aware of current developments in nursing and health services management:

  • By reading current literature and keeping abreast of new developments in nursing and health services management
  • By attending appropriate lectures, seminars, and refresher courses
  • In discussion with the Director of Nursing, identifying areas where you require further education or enhancement of your existing skills
  • To carry out such duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the Director of Nursing.
