Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.The Departments of Chemistry/Physics in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of chiroptical spectroscopy of the interaction of various chiral molecules with carbon nanotubes, in particular searching for signal enhancement in vibrational circular dichroism and chirality induction.Position 2

• You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of Experimental Physics. You will be embedded in the and will be co-supervised by (Chemistry) and (Physics) within a project funded by FWO. The second project focuses on studying the interaction of carbon nanotubes with chiral molecules, using chiroptical spectroscopy, in particular electronic circular dichroism, vibrational circular dichroism, Raman optical activity and circularly polarized emission. This project not only involves the spectroscopic characterisation but will also require you to prepare your own samples (filling of carbon nanotubes, structure sorting of carbon nanotubes), hence experience in chemical preparation techniques is a plus.
• You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
• You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the department of Chemistry.

• You hold a Master degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science. Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

Knowledge of Matlab is a plus and additional experience in one (or more) of the following fields is highly appreciated: laser spectroscopy, chiroptical spectroscopy, nanoscience, carbon nanotube characterization and/or processing, physical chemistry.

• We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another three years.
