Haematology Medical Education Fellow
British Medical Journal
The post is for a London Haematology Education fellow to work on specific training projects and deliver on the education strategy of HEE and the RCPath. The role will involve working closely with the Royal College of Pathologists, the British Society of Haematology and other London TPDs/colleagues to develop specific training modules and consolidate local resources for the haematology subsection of the Pathology Portal – an innovative, adaptive learning platform available to all healthcare trainees and professionals.Using technology to enhance learning, the Portal incorporates the ability to digitally host and view whole slide images and a wide range of other resources, including teaching sessions, videos and quizzes. The development of the Pathology Portal is ongoing but requires dedicated time to fully utilise all of its potential functions and develop specific modules, mapped to the curriculum that trainees can work through during their time in training. We are keen to contribute our vast local catalogue of Barts Health teaching resources and cases to this unique educational resource as well as teaching material developed by other training rotations to reduce duplication and provide broader access.Main duties of the jobIn addition to developing online and digital resources we have recently reflected on the impact of remote learning, accelerated by the COVID pandemic on the trainee experience1. Moving to a remote platform and allowing on-demand access has increased equity of teaching for those training away from teaching hospitals and who work less than full time. But it has led to some loss of social cohesion that was facilitated by attending in-person teaching and also impacted the ability to deliver interactive, problem-solving seminars which involve applying knowledge and being able to freely ask questions in real time. The proposed Education fellow would work to recover and create learning contexts which are enhanced by in-person attendance and focus on areas of the new haematology curriculum that are often neglected in traditional lecture formats such as consent training and palliative care. The proposed Education fellow will therefore be instrumental in ensuring we maintain a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to haematology training and develop both online platforms such as the Pathology Portal as well as organise in-person training sessions for all London trainees in areas that have historically been overlooked such as communicating bad news, consent training, practical procedures, and critical thinking/problem solving.About usThe Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients. Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together. We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment where staff treat one another with dignity and respect. We aim to create an equitable working environment where every individual can fulfil their potential.Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.Job description
