Manager and senior engineer for nanotechnology cleanroomFaculty of Science and TechnologyThe positionThe has two open permanent engineer positions, as we are building a new cleanroom. The engineers will be in charge of the new cleanroom for photonics and nanotechnology, to open in mid-2026. This implies taking care of and carrying out a range of tasks, including construction of the cleanroom, acquisition, installation and maintenance of equipment, ensuring health and safety measures, train new users, develop and maintain processes for design, fabrication and characterisation. It also includes dissemination to the general public, participate in teaching and supervision, and various administrative tasks. The engineers will collaborate with the Norwegian network of cleanrooms, Norfab, and as part of an EU-funded project, facilitate contact between Norwegian companies and pilot lines for photonic integrated circuits (PIC) in Europe. The engineers will work together with researchers and technical staff at the department to fulfill the tasks. The engineers will also have responsibilities for the department at large, not involving the cleanroom, and there will be some flexibility in the responsibilities and work distribution.The engineers will work closely with the Ultrasound, Microwaves and Optics (UMO) group, as the main users of the cleanroom, and also with other internal and external users of the cleanroom. The UMO group is the largest optics groups in Norway, with ca. 30 employees. The group focuses on photonic integrated circuits, nanophotonics and advanced microscopy, covering applications within medical biology, diagnosis, environmental monitoring, infrared spectroscopy of trace gasses and integration of all these aspects with machine learning. The group has managed to attract several competitive EU/RCN fundings, notably within PICs. The group co-operates with industry and has a strong innovation drive with many ongoing innovation projects at different levels of maturity. The positions are partly funded by the EU-project NorChip – A Norwegian competence centre for chip and sensor technologies. The engineers will contribute to this project, collaborate with the project partners (SINTEF, NTNU, Univ. of Oslo, USN and the Electronic Coast) and small- and medium-sized companies which need competence on chip and sensor technologies.The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within 6 months after receiving the offer.QualificationsYou must have an education and experience that is relevant for the tasks associated with running a cleanroom. This can include a master or PhD degree in nanotechnology, physics, chemistry, electronics or a similar field. You must be willing to take on daily tasks also if you are the manager, and you must be able to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment. Training will be given regarding tasks that you are not familiar with, and the distribution of tasks will be discussed with the applicants.You must be fluent in oral and written English and should preferably know Norwegian or a Scandinavian language. Applicants who are not fluent in a Scandinavian language will be asked to learn Norwegian.
