The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.About the jobAbout the positionFor a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.The focus of the position is research on digital twin technologies that can be used for predictive maintenance of dynamic power cables tailored for offshore wind applications. This includes the interpretation of fibre-optic sensor data together with structural response models, that can be applied to extrapolate the behaviour outside the sensor area. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with the industry that will provide real life monitored data. Key research topics include:

  • Global dynamic analysis of power cable
  • Local stress analysis of cross-section components
  • Data analysis of monitored data with respect to frequency contents versus relevant load components
  • Correlation studies between numerical and monitored responses

The position is being part of the project “Cost Effective Subsea Dynamic Cables for Offshore Wind” with the overall aim of supporting the design of innovative, cost-effective, and robust composite-based subsea dynamic cables tailored for offshore wind applications. The project includes altogether three PhD positions, covering cable design, integrity management and digital twin technologies for predictive maintenance, where the latter is the topic of the present position. The candidate is expected to cooperate closely with the two other PhD candidates being part of the project.The joint marine structures research group formed by the Department of Marine Technology, SINTEF OCEAN and industry partners, is world leading with regards to the development of global and local response models as well as experimental methods that concerns the mechanical response of dynamic power cables.Your immediate leader will be the Supervising Professor and the Head of the Department.Duties of the position

  • Perform fundamental research on the above-mentioned topics
  • In understanding with the supervisors provide a detailed plan for PhD study that includes the mandatory courses, research activities, dissemination and milestones
  • Report progress on a regular basis and in agreement with the supervisors
  • Cooperate with relevant project and industry partners

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in Marine Technology, Ocean Engineering, Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.

Salary and conditionsAs a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.The period of employment is 3 years.Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
