The department has 15 tenure track professors supported by lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 120. The department and school have well-equipped research infrastructures and access to national scientific computing services. Furthermore, the department and school are located at the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo, where several other research institutions and organizations have laboratories and offices.Job descriptionThe Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Rock Engineering. This position is part of one of Aalto University’s key research areas, known as “Materials and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources”.Rock Engineering is a field of engineering that deals with the design and construction of structures in rock, such as underground facilities, tunnels, and mines. This field often incorporates elements of rock mechanics, excavation technologies, applied geology and structural engineering to address the unique challenges posed by working with rock as a construction material.The position requires theoretical mastery of rock mechanics, rock excavation and tunnelling in hard rock geological environment. The candidate should have a close interest in how these themes can be addressed in the Nordic context. The candidate is expected to perform multidisciplinary research with researchers in Civil Engineering and other disciplines. Good collaboration and communication skills with industrial and public partners in the field of construction and mining, are essential.Professors at Aalto University are expected to perform high-quality research and teaching and supervise students on the doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels. This position involves teaching in the Bachelor’s Program in “Civil Engineering” and in the Master’s Programmes “Geoengineering” and “European Mining Course”.Professors are also expected to be proactive members of the university and international scientific communities, and to exhibit leadership and service to society.RequirementsApplicants must have a doctoral degree in relevant engineering discipline as well as international research activities. Teaching experience and pedagogical studies are considered beneficial in the evaluation.Well-demonstrated collaboration skills and an excellent command of English are essential as well. The merits and potential of the applicants will be appraised via a holistic evaluation based on the quality and quantity of research, teaching, and academic leadership, in addition to the overall activity in the scientific community and society. A bibliometric analysis will be conducted for supporting the evaluation of research merits. The supplied most important research publications will be assessed with respect to their potential impact, as well as clarity of argumentation and as indicators of future research potential.Scientific awards and recognitions as well as experience in obtaining and applying for funding, preferably academic competitive funding, are considered important advantages.
