Research Fellow
University College London
About us Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students. This is an exciting opportunity to join the RNAP laboratory at the Institute for Structural and Molecular Biology at UCL. Our research is focussed on the structure, function and evolution of gene expression in archaea. This research program is about the coupling of transcription and translation in Sulfolobus, and we are seeking three enthusiastic, knowledgable and hard-working individuals to push the frontiers of science!About the role The main purpose of this position is to carry out cutting edge research. The team for this project includes a biochemist, a structural biologist, and a systems biologists with experience in functional genomics. The three will work as closely knit team in a multidisciplinary fashion, taking ownership of their project and happy to collaborate.Your research will focus on biochemistry and molecular biology approaches to study transcription in archaeal organisms including:1. Extensive cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins , and assembly of multicomponent complexes
2. Genetic approaches to tag factors in vivo, followed by enrichment/pulldown of complexes from cell lysates and their characterisation
3. Functional in vitro transcription assays, protein and nucleic acid interaction assays including EMSAs, BIAcore and other biophysical methods
4. Reconstitution of transcription-translation reactionsThis role is an open-ended contract with a funding end date of 28/02/2030 in the first instance.Research Fellows – ‘Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £34,502 – £36,348 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Proven track record in molecular biology related techniques and the handling of recombinant proteins
2. Experience with functional in vitro assays including transcription and translation
3. Successful candidates need experience in microbiology, growth of prokaryotes and simple genetic approaches
4. Preferably published in the fields of transcription or translation
5. You will be expected to produce independent and original research contributions
6. In addition to developing and conducting the research, you will communicate results as scientific papers and in scientific presentations at local, national, and international conferences. What we offer As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
