Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds focuses on creating impact through science-based innovation.We are looking for a (Senior) Research Scientist for research on intelligent radio access networks (RAN) in beyond-5G/6G. Responsibilities include system aspects of RAN like Cloud-native RAN architectural design, proof-of-concept development, developing intelligent algorithms and software for next-gen radio resource management, creating control apps for RAN intelligence controllers, and solutions for cloud/network function orchestration. Future research on new beyond-5G/6G technologies is also expected.We are providing interesting and challenging work in a dynamic research team. This opens excellent possibilities for the applicant to participate both in national and international R&D projects. The position also opens possibilities in participation to new VTT’s PhD Program. As a (Senior) Research Scientist you would be responsible later for preparations of new projects and project management.The work may include following parts:

• Conduct research on cloud-native RAN architectures, focusing on intelligence and flexibility for 5G/6G networks
• Explore and develop AI/ML-based solutions for radio resource management (RRM), system orchestration, and automation in cloud-native environments
• Design and implement cloud-based proof-of-concept prototypes for intelligent RAN functionalities, including xApps and rApps for O-RAN RIC platforms
• Manage and provision cloud-native resources, such as containers, virtual machines, and databases, using modern tools like Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform
• Analyze system performance and interpret data from cloud-native environments and telecommunications systems
• Utilize advanced statistical and mathematical models with tools like Python or MATLAB to derive insights and validate research outcomes
• Write and publish high-quality research papers in leading journals and conferences
• Collaborate closely with our clients, as customer assignments are an invaluable part of VTT’s R&D work

We hope that you have:

• M.Sc./D.Sc./Ph.D. in Telecommunications, Computer science, Electrical engineering or a related field
• Proven experience in wireless network technologies, particularly 5G, LTE, and/or 6G
• Strong understanding of cloud-native environments and experience developing applications for telecommunications networks
• Practical skills in AI/ML, edge computing, and cloud automation frameworks
• Knowledge of 4G/5G L1/L2/L3 protocols and experience with protocol testing
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems using established or innovative research methods
• Hands-on experience in system analysis, algorithm development, and software prototyping
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory, with a proven track record of publishing research
• Familiarity with tools for cloud orchestration and resource management, such as Terraform or Kubernetes
