The position is for a fixed term of 5 years and is associated with funding from Western Norway Health Authority, in the recently awarded project AI supported services for image-diagnostics in Western Norway (ASIS).The Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre (MMIV, https://www.mmiv.no), Department of Radiology, Haukeland University Hospital, has an open position as senior software developer. The applicant is expected to support MMIV’s core activities and contribute to the strategic development of MMIV.We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Software Developer / Data Scientist to join the project AI supported services for image-diagnostics in Western Norway (ASIS), a recently funded strategic project by the Western Norway Health Authority. ASIS will develop AI solutions aimed at extracting information from multimodal medical images related to various clinical conditions, for example cancer, stroke, and musculoskeletal disorders. The algorithms will be focused on segmentation, detection and data extraction.The software developer / data scientist will assist in the development and maintenance of our FIONA (Federated Imaging and Outcome based Network Appliance) research infrastructure. FIONA is designed to integrate AI-based image analysis solutions into clinical workflows and to enhance precision diagnostics in radiology. The employee will work in a hospital-integrated research environment, collaborating closely with clinicians, data scientists, and IT specialists to ensure AI solutions are setup and maintained to be explainable, ethical, and effective in real-world healthcare applications.Research is a core activity at out university hospital and at the Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre (MMIV, https://www.mmiv.no), we are committed to leveraging artificial intelligence, cutting-edge radiological equipment, and advanced analytical workflows to transform the future of precision diagnostics.   • Implement and maintain FIONA’s web-front-end and backend code (JavaScript, php)
  • Work on establishing state-of-the-art image processing and analysis algorithms, implementing AI-tools and on machine learning in the established research infrastructure and analytic workflow in Helse-Vest
  • Have a central role in running the ASIS project, supporting services for AI in image-diagnostics in the Western Norway Health region
  • Work closely with the research engineers developing the PACS, RIS and EDC solution at MMIV and Helse Vest IKT
  • Assist in the implementation of existing commercial solutions for imaging diagnostics support in the research PACS system

Qualifications and skillsRequired:

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Data Science, Machine Learning, AI, Medical Imaging, or a related field
  • Experience in deep learning for medical image analysis (segmentation, classification, object detection)
  • Strong programming and scripting skills in C/C++/bash/Python, with experience in PyTorch, TensorFlow, MONAI
  • Expertise in and/or willingness to learn DICOM/HL7 processing and integration into hospital IT systems
  • Experience in cloud computing, high-performance computing (HPC), CI/CD, or edge AI for healthcare
  • Ability to collaborate with clinicians, IT specialists, and legal teams to ensure AI solutions are clinically relevant and compliant
  • Documentation of such experience must be included in the application (e.g. links to GitHub repositories)
  • Willingness to learn task-specific programming languages and frameworks (golang/WASM)

Preferred:

  • Experience with regulatory frameworks for medical AI (GDPR, MDR, CE/FDA approvals)
  • Knowledge of biostatistics and radiomics for AI-based biomarker extraction
  • Background in natural language processing (NLP) for AI-driven clinical decision support
