A position as Staff Engieere (avdelingsingeniør) is available at the (AMB).The position is linked to the research project EvoLight, funded by a Tromsø Forskningsstiftelse (TFS) Starting Grant , and is carried out in the research group (ACP).The position is temporary with a funding for 3 years.The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within 6 months after receiving the offer.About the DepartmentThe Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) includes 6 research groups. Research and teaching at AMB has a broad span, from molecular mechanisms at cellular/subcellular levels via studies of adaptations at the organismal level, to ecological interactions in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The institute is an exciting and cutting-edge academic and research unit in biology that addresses challenges in basic research, industrial and administrative-oriented research with a strong focus on the North. The Institute has extensive national and international research collaboration including regional institutions like Framsenteret, IMR and NIBIO.Job descriptionEvoLight aims to understand how fast animal populations adapt when their range shifts into areas with a novel light environment. For this we will use the recent (~80 years) expansion of the songbird great tit (Parus major) into the Arctic as a natural experiment to address this question. We are setting up a nestbox population of great tits on the Tromsø island and will carry out studies/experiments both in the field and in the lab.TasksFor this position we are looking for a motivated candidate who is willing to work with great tits. The work will involve intense great tit nest monitoring in the spring/summer, when the birds are breeding (April to late July), and the rest of the year will be dedicated to setting up feeders, marking birds, data entry and experiments with animals in captivity.The candidate will also be expected to assist with setting up indoor testing facilities and with animal care. The position is physically demanding, sometimes requiring long hours in the field under all weather conditions. During the breeding season the candidate also has to be prepared for working outside normal hours. The work is carried out by an international team of researchers and students, so teamwork and communication skills are essential.The necessary tasks of the position include:Field tasks:
