Job title:

Staff Scientist in Molecular Toxicology

Company

Stockholms universitet

Job description

The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The Department is divided into four units with more than 170 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science you will be part of a dynamic environment with work being done in leading research areas and with a strong international profile. More information about us, please visit: .We are seeking a highly motivated Staff Scientist to join our Molecular Toxicology research environment at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), Campus Solna. SciLifeLab is a national research center for molecular biosciences with a focus on health and environmental research, hosting leading-edge technologies and interdisciplinary expertise. Our research focuses on understanding how environmental contaminants impact human and environmental health at the molecular and cellular levels. We employ advanced toxicological tools, including high-throughput screening, high-content imaging, omics technologies, and computational approaches, to elucidate mechanisms of toxicity. Ultimately, our work contributes to a deeper understanding of how chemical exposures contribute to the burden of disease and environmental degradation, supporting the development of science-based strategies for risk assessment, public health, and environmental protection.Main responsibilitiesThe Staff Scientist will be based at SciLifeLab, Campus Solna, with a main responsibility to support research in molecular toxicology at the Exposure and Effects Unit (ACESx). The staff scientist will provide scientific and technical support to research projects related to toxicological method development and mechanistic studies. The role will be integral to maintaining and advancing laboratory capabilities at the interface of molecular biology, toxicology, and environmental health. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing and applying advanced methodologies for molecular toxicological assessments, including high-content imaging, bulk and single-cell omics.
  • Providing technical and scientific support for ongoing research projects, including experimental design, data acquisition, and analysis.
  • Mentoring MSc, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers in toxicology and related methods.
  • Maintaining and managing laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with chemical and biological safety protocols.
  • Supporting the operation and further development of the toxicological research infrastructure within the SciLifeLab environment, as well as leading or participating in grant applications related to research infrastructure and technical development.
  • Lecturing in MSc-level courses in toxicology and supporting the associated course-laboratory activities.

Qualification requirementsWe are seeking a candidate with a doctorate degree and strong scientific and technical expertise in molecular toxicology who is motivated to contribute to both research excellence and toxicological infrastructure development. The ideal candidate will have experience working at the interface of experimental toxicology, cell and molecular biology, and be eager to support a dynamic and collaborative research environment. Strong communication, organizational, and mentoring skills are essential, as is a commitment to laboratory safety and continuous methodological innovation. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities, such as a positive attitude and strong collaborative abilities. Other specific qualifications and skills include:

  • A doctoral degree in toxicology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated scientific and technical competence relevant to research infrastructure, particularly in toxicology-related techniques and platforms.
  • Documented experience in experimental work involving cell culture and animal models, including standard molecular and cellular techniques such as Western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and microscopy.
  • Experience with DNA and RNA extraction from various tissue types, including specialized tissues (e.g., sperm), as well as quality control and library preparation for next-generation sequencing.
  • Experience with advanced molecular and cellular analysis tools such as high-content imaging, transcriptomics, and epigenetics. Proven ability to work independently as well as in collaborative interdisciplinary environments, and to publish papers in mechanistic toxicology and related methodologies.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Classroom teaching experience. Previous leadership and coordination of graduate level courses in toxicology are important merits.
  • Experience supporting student research projects is considered a strong merit.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety practices is essential.
  • Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
