Scientifically grounded research is complemented by our phenomenon-oriented research platforms.We are now inviting applications for a Tenure Track position in Space Data Processing (Computing Sciences).The position will be filled primary as a permanent Professor position or secondary a fixed-term Associate Professor under the tenure track system. The level is determined by the applicant’s merits and career stage.Job description and requirementsWe are seeking an outstanding scholar with a strong academic track record and vision in telecommunications engineering, broadly defined. The successful candidate will be expected to lead high-impact research, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute to teaching and curriculum development in telecommunications, wireless technologies, and future networked systems.Key Responsibilities:– Conduct and lead internationally recognized research in computer science or telecommunications engineering and related areas. Secure external research funding and establish robust academic, industrial, and public sector partnerships.
– Develop new research initiatives and contribute to the universitys innovation ecosystem.
– Teach and supervise students at all levels (BSc, MSc, PhD), and contribute to curriculum development and internationalisation.
– Participate in academic leadership, particularly in the development of the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) research group.
– Participate in managing and using the Kvarken-Satellite which University of Vaasa is launching in collaboration with Aalto university to research precise positioning, orbit determination and 3D printing of satellite vehicles.
– Managing the Space Data lab together with the research team to facilitate efficient processing of large data sets.
– Aligning research partly on universitys strategic theme for energy transition.We welcome applicants whose expertise aligns with one or more of the following research areas:– Satellite-based Earth observation, GNSS systems, AI for space data, or climate and environmental monitoring.
– New Space technologies, CubeSats, or small satellite platforms.
– Experience in translating space data into actionable insights for environmental or industrial applications.
– Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technologies and applications.
– Satellite Communications and Non-Terrestrial Networks: Advanced techniques and architectures for satellite internet (LEO/MEO/GEO), hybrid terrestrial/non-terrestrial systems, 6G developments, and satellite remote sensing.
– AI and Machine Learning in Communications: Strong background in modern AI/ML algorithms applied to communication systems.Required Qualifications:– A doctoral degree in telecommunications engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
– An internationally recognized record of scholarly excellence and academic leadership.
– A strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences
– Experience in leading or participating in competitive research projects.
– Demonstrated ability to build industry collaboration and deliver societal impact.
– A commitment to high-quality teaching and student mentoring.
– Demonstrated leadership in academic as well as research organizations involving multi-disciplinary teams.
– Experience with project coordination, public-private partnerships, and innovation ecosystems.
– Strong connections with space agencies (e.g., ESA, NASA), industry partners, and international research networks will be considered a significant advantage
– Excellent communication skills in English; Finnish language skills are an asset but not mandatory.
– For Full Professor candidates: a proven record of successful supervision of PhD theses.The appointed tenure track will join the [Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) research group](https://www.uwasa.fi/en/research/groups/cyber-physical-systems), which takes a multidisciplinary approach to advancing intelligent systems that integrate physical processes with digital control and communication.
