The thesis work aims to contribute to the understanding of the physics of threaded joints subjected to both longitudinal and rotational high-dynamic wave propagation during percussive drilling. Methods for performing efficient analyses should be investigated. The results will guide modeling methods during the development of rock drill percussion, dampers, and rotation systems.Background:
Simulations of percussive drilling are regularly used in product development. Hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical simulations-especially for longitudinal and torsional wave propagation-are performed with high precision. Simulation libraries of components useful for rock drill design are continuously developed.Mission:
Rotational wave propagation is essential for developing the rotation system, which includes rods, threaded joints, gearboxes, hydraulic motors, and the supply system. At the interface between the drill bit and rock, during rock breaking, the percussive longitudinal load affects rotation resistance and may even cause the drill bit to stop rotating. The threaded joints in the drill string are carefully designed to withstand extreme loads without rattling, while still being relatively easy to unthread. In this thesis work, analysis methods should be investigated. 3D models of specific load cases and co-simulations using 3D and 2D (Hopsan models) for continuous drilling analysis should be performed. If possible, a simplified Hopsan library component model of threaded joints can be created. Verifying measurements will be conducted, adding extra credibility to the thesis.Qualifications:
Knowledge of mechanics and simulation techniques is required. It is also valuable to be thorough, persistent, open-minded, and collaborative. We offer this thesis to two students working together in the rock drill development department in Örebro for most of the time.How to Apply:
