Epiroc

Job description

Do you want to help us speed up the shift towards a more sustainable mining and construction industry? By doing your thesis in collaboration with Epiroc you will get the chance to be a part of this journey. You will work together with experienced and helpful colleagues in an atmosphere characterized by creativity, innovation, and workplace diversity. In your specific project you have the chance to be a part of a challenging and educational experience while growing both professionally and personallyEducation Background:
Relevant education includes, but is not limited to, Material Design or Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Material Science and Metallic Materials.Level of Thesis Project:
Master’s ThesisNumber of Students in the Project:
One studentTarget:
This project aims to provide insights into the key parameters affecting the gas nitrocarburizing of steels and its impact on the resulting properties. Background:
Epiroc products operate under severe conditions, and the components must meet high standards with a high degree of complexity to ensure optimal lifespan. This requires components with precise heat treatments. The ferritic nitrocarburizing process is essential to achieve the desired properties. Variations in gas composition, temperature, and pre-oxidation temperature result in different steel surface properties. The surface of nitrocarburized steel consists of a hard, brittle compound layer. The properties of this layer are influenced by its phase distribution, which in turn is affected by the steel composition and heat treatment parameters. The product’s performance is closely related to the surface layer’s properties, such as residual stress, hardness, and phase distribution.Mission:
Your mission in this project is to characterize the nitrocarburized surface layer, with a focus on the compound layer, of various steels. The project will be considered successful when the properties of the nitrocarburized layer can be explained by the applied heat treatment parameters.Qualifications:
We are seeking a goal-oriented, driven student who is a self-starter, detail-oriented, and has a strong sense of responsibility. Advanced knowledge of material science and metallography at the university level is required. The student will perform most of the characterization at the university using available equipment. The minimum required equipment includes (but is not limited to) sample preparation tools, SEM-EBSD, Light Optical Microscope, hardness measurement equipment (Micro-Vickers, preferably Knoop), and XRD. Access to a Focused Ion Beam and micro/nano hardness indentation is also particularly advantageous. How to apply:
