The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position ofUNIVERSITY LECTURER IN SPANISHfor a permanent appointment beginning on 1 August 2025.The position, which includes a six-month trial period, is in the discipline of Ibero-Romance philology at the Department of Languages.The field of the position is Spanish. The appointee’s duties include providing, in accordance with the degree requirements, bachelor’s and master’s level teaching especially in Spanish-language literature, supervising and examining theses, conducting research in Spanish-language literature and completing other tasks involving the discipline. Additional duties include participating in teaching planning and development. The appointee must have solid and broad-based expertise in the Spanish language and associated research. Alongside familiarity with Spanish-language literature, knowledge of another Romance language or evidence from another specialist field, such as research in applied linguistics (e.g., translation, teaching Spanish as a foreign language) or digital humanities, will be considered an advantage. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to providing and planning the teaching of core studies offered by the Department of Languages and to collaborating in research and teaching with the staff of other language disciplines and representatives of other humanities fields.Requirements for the position and assessment of qualificationAccording to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, appointees to university lectureships must hold an applicable doctoral degree and have the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses (usually prepared in Spanish).When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration. Good cooperation and interaction skills are considered an advantage in the overall evaluation of applicants.Under the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they teach. The appointee to the present position must have not only excellent skills in Spanish, but also satisfactory skills in Finnish or Swedish as well as good skills in English. If the appointee does not speak Finnish, they are expected to acquire reasonable proficiency in Finnish (at least skill level B2) within five years from the date of taking the position be able to contribute to departmental work in Finnish. Further information on the requirements for and demonstration of language proficiency is available on the .What we offerThe University of Helsinki offers the appointee a first-class research and teaching environment as well as the conditions required for international cooperation ( ).The salary for the position will be based on levels 5-7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross annual salary will range from €42,000 to €56,000, depending on their previous experience and qualifications.
